Fiumicino was erected as a comune in 1992; previously it was part of Rome, almost totally included in the former "Municipio XIV".
The name means little river. The town of "Fiumicino" should not be confused with its namesake, Fiumicino, a small river near Rimini.
Fiumicino is home to the largest airport in Italy, the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, which includes the Fiumicino Aeroporto railway station. The city also houses the head offices of Alitalia and Blue Panorama Airlines.[1][2] All Nippon Airways has its Rome Sales Office in the Room 447 in the (Torre Uffici), on the airport property.[3] Cathay Pacific has an office in the airport's Torre Uffici 2.[4] In addition Small Planet Airlines has an office in Fiumicino.[5]
In addition, Fiumicino has a large fishing center on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast and a sea resort.
